Combining tradition and innovation
With around 48,000 inhabitants and a correspondingly extensive range of retail services, the city of Cuxhaven is at the heart of the district providing everyday consumer goods as well as a more upmarket offering. The perception of the city of Cuxhaven as a tourist destination also has a positive influence on local retail services; holidaymakers and visitors to Cuxhaven make up a significant proportion of retail customers in the city centre.
Less centralised than the German average
Data collected in 2016 in the district of Cuxhaven by MB Research declared the towns of Cuxhaven and Schiffdorf as outstanding retail centres. However, the district of Cuxhaven was deemed significantly less centralised than the German average.
What is more, Bremerhaven, with its more extensive offering, is considered the main retail centre of the region. There are also two popular furniture markets in Bad Bederkesa and Lamstedt as well as the retail centre of Schiffdorf Spaden, situated just near the city border of Bremerhaven. So while there is sustainable infrastructure and purchasing power in place, trade is in a state of flux almost everywhere. A number of approaches to the retail sector in the district of Cuxhaven are being remodelled. There are many exciting developments ahead. Meanwhile Cuxhaven city centre is set to remain one of the most important shopping destinations for residents of the city and the surrounding areas. The "Südersteinstraße – Nordersteinstraße – Kaemmererplatz – Deichstraße – Lotsenviertel" axis forms the main business area of the city centre, with a focus on specialist retail outlets catering to consumer's mid to long-term needs.
Along with the retail industry, craftsmanship also represents an influential and extremely varied branch of industry in the district of Cuxhaven. A large number of businesses, both well-established companies and some new start-ups, are combining traditional processes with modern materials and technologies and are working on forging enduring business relationships, thanks in no small part to their drive to innovate.
